How Do Keepers Change Auction Draft Prices?
Keepers remove both players and budget from the pool. Because kept players are usually bargains, the money left in the room chases fewer good players, so remaining stars cost more than their no-keeper prices. That effect is called keeper inflation. It is not a universal surcharge: the direction and size depend on how much player value leaves compared with how many auction dollars leave.
What changes in the auction pool when players are kept?
A keeper league starts with an unevenly reduced pool. A kept player disappears from the auction, but the cost assigned to that player also disappears from the budgets available to bid. The room therefore loses one roster option and some spending power at the same time. If the player removed represents more draft value than the budget removed, the remaining pool contains relatively more desirable players for each dollar still available.
That imbalance is the mechanical source of inflation. The auction is not simply missing players; it is missing players and money in different proportions. A player kept at a low cost removes a useful option while leaving most of the manager’s budget available for later nominations.
How can you reason about keeper inflation directionally?
Compare the quality of what leaves with the dollars that leave. When several strong players are retained cheaply, the room loses a larger share of its desirable player pool than of its spendable budget. More total bargain value kept generally means more upward pressure on the remaining stars. When keepers consume budgets close to what those players would have drawn in the auction, the imbalance is smaller.
The effect can also vary by position. If keepers are concentrated at one position, that position’s remaining options may face a different room dynamic from positions with few or no keepers. Think in terms of the remaining player pool and remaining budgets, not one uniform adjustment applied to every name.
Why do late-round keeper costs matter?
The round or cost at which a player is kept determines how much budget remains available after that player leaves the pool. A player retained at a late-round cost can remove a strong auction option while taking only a small amount of budget with it. That creates a larger mismatch between desirable players removed and dollars removed than a higher-cost keeper would.
Late-round keepers can therefore matter even when the keeper list looks short. Count the budget attached to every retained player, then consider the quality and positions removed. The cost is not just a record of who is unavailable; it helps explain how much spending power remains to compete for everyone else.
What common mistakes lead to bad keeper-auction reasoning?
One mistake is using a no-keeper price list without considering who and how much budget has left the room. Those numbers describe a different pool. Another is assuming that every remaining position moves by the same amount. Keeper concentration can make the pressure uneven, and the remaining roster needs of managers can amplify or soften it.
It is also a mistake to look only at the number of keepers. Two leagues can retain the same number of players while removing very different mixes of player quality and budget. Finally, do not confuse a keeper’s assigned cost with the player’s full impact on the room: the key comparison is what the player removes versus what the attached cost removes.
